Rays call up outfielder Josh Lowe, No. 10 prospect in MLB

The Tampa Bay Rays are calling up outfielder Josh Lowe, one of the top prospects in their system, the team announced Wednesday. Lowe, who will wear No. 53, was ranked 10th by Jim Bowden on The Athletic's recent list of top 50 MLB prospects. Keith Law had Lowe at No. 31 on his midseason top 50 that was published in July.

The 23-year-old is slashing .282/.369/.540 with 21 home runs and is 24 for 24 on steals in 98 games for Triple-A Durham this season.

In other Rays news, the team reinstated first baseman Ji-Man Choi (left hamstring strain) and right-hander Matt Wisler (right middle finger inflammation) from the 10-day injured list.

The Rays sit comfortably atop the American League with an 88-51 record. They play the final game of a three-game series against the Red Sox at 7:10 p.m. ET on Wednesday night.

Is Lowe ready for the majors?

Jim Bowden, MLB senior writer: Lowe has a strong combination of speed and power for his 6-4 frame, and he joined Bobby Witt Jr. in the 20 home run/20 stolen base club in the minors this season. Thanks to his ability to work counts and draw walks, Lowe has gotten on base at nearly a 37 percent clip.

He’s an above-average defender in whatever corner you want to put him in (outfield, infield), with an arm that prevents opposing base runners from taking an extra base. Lowe’s presence, composure and poise really stand out when he plays. He looks major-league ready now.
